Staffing Rating
Marion Regional Nursing Home earns an overall 4-star rating, which means it performs above average compared to nursing homes nationally. That overall score is a composite of three separate ratings, and it's worth understanding each one individually because they tell different stories. The staffing and quality measures ratings are both a perfect 5 stars, meaning the facility ranks much higher than average in both areas. Strong staffing means residents are getting more hands-on nurse time relative to how many people live there, which translates to more attentive, responsive day-to-day care. The 5-star quality measures score reflects outcomes across 15 clinical indicators, things like how well the facility manages pain, prevents pressure wounds, or maintains residents' ability to move around, and scoring this high suggests residents are genuinely faring well health-wise.
The one area to pay attention to is the health inspection rating, which sits at 2 stars, or below average. This score is based on findings from state inspectors who visit the facility and cite any problems they observe or uncover. A below-average score here means inspectors found more issues, or more serious ones, than you would typically see at a comparable facility. It does not necessarily mean the home is unsafe, but it is worth asking the facility directly what those citations were and what steps they have taken to address them. The good news is that the strong staffing and outcomes scores suggest the care being delivered day to day is solid, so families should weigh all three pieces together rather than focusing on any single number.

Questions to ask when visiting
1. How many residents does each certified nursing assistant care for during the day shift, and does that number change at night or on weekends?
2. How long have most of your nursing staff been working here, and what is your average turnover rate over the past year?
3. What happens when a resident falls or has a medical emergency in the middle of the night, and who specifically is responsible for responding?
4. Can I show up unannounced at different times of day to visit my family member, or are there restrictions on when I can come?
5. How do you handle a situation where a resident tells staff they are in pain or feeling sick but cannot clearly explain what is wrong?
6. What does a typical weekday actually look like for a resident who does not participate in group activities, and how does staff make sure that person still has social interaction throughout the day?

About CMS Star Ratings
CMS assigns 1–5 star ratings to Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing homes based on three domains: health inspections, staffing levels, and quality measures. The overall rating is a weighted composite.
A 5-star overall rating does not guarantee excellence in every domain — inspect each sub-rating independently. Data is updated quarterly.
