Staffing Rating
Canterbury Towers Inc. earns an impressive 5-star overall rating from CMS, which is a composite of three separate ratings that each tell you something a little different about the facility. The health inspection rating comes in at 4 stars, meaning state inspectors found fewer and less serious issues here than at most nursing homes - a good sign that the facility is being run safely and responsibly. The staffing rating is a perfect 5 stars, which is arguably the most important one for day-to-day care: it means residents here get more nurse time and attention than the vast majority of facilities in the country. The quality measures rating sits at 3 stars, which is average - this one looks at 15 clinical outcomes like wound care, falls, and infections, so it's worth asking the facility directly about any areas they're actively working to improve.
The overall 5-star rating reflects how well these three pieces come together, and Canterbury Towers holds up exceptionally well. The combination of strong inspection results and outstanding staffing levels gives families real reason for confidence. The average quality measures score is the one area to keep an eye on, but it doesn't overshadow an otherwise excellent picture. When you're touring, it's a great conversation starter - ask staff what they're doing to push those clinical outcomes higher.

Questions to ask when visiting
1. How many residents does each certified nursing assistant care for during a typical day shift, and does that number change at night or on weekends?
2. If my loved one has the same CNA assigned to them most days, how long has that person worked here - and what's your average staff turnover rate over the past year?
3. Walk me through exactly what happens, step by step, if a resident falls or has a medical emergency in the middle of the night.
4. Can you show me the most recent state inspection report, and can you explain any deficiencies that were cited and what you've done to fix them?
5. What does a typical Tuesday look like for a resident who doesn't have any scheduled therapy - how do they spend their morning, afternoon, and evening?
6. If my mother's condition changes and I'm not there, how quickly will someone call me, who will make that call, and is there one specific person I can reach out to directly if I'm not hearing back?

About CMS Star Ratings
CMS assigns 1–5 star ratings to Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing homes based on three domains: health inspections, staffing levels, and quality measures. The overall rating is a weighted composite.
A 5-star overall rating does not guarantee excellence in every domain — inspect each sub-rating independently. Data is updated quarterly.
